Classic Jungle Shyvana: Clearing Camps with W and Stacking Wriggle's
Clear camps fast with W and stack Wriggle's Lantern. Steal the enemy jungler's empty camps to build a lead, then hold the line with Wit's End and defensive items while spamming Q. Classic Shyvana isn't an AP poke champion — she's an AD bruiser that doubles down on on-hit effects with Q and pushes hard with W.
This is a starter guide Veralion put together right before Shyvana hit the Classic rotation.
The Fast Version
- Position: Jungle
- Summoner Spells: Smite + Flash
- Runes: Attack Speed / Armor / Flat CDR / Movement Speed
- Masteries: Offense 0 / Defense 9 / Utility 21
- Skill Order: Max W → Q → E, R at 6·11·16
- Core Items: Wriggle's Lantern → Phage → Wit's End
- Gameplan: Fast camp rotation, stack Wriggle's, steal enemy camps, secure dragons and objectives
What's Different on Classic Shyvana
W is your first look on Classic Shyvana. At max rank, its DPS hits 90, clearing jungle camps and waves in record time. In dragon form, it leaves a trail of flame.
Q doesn't grant bonus attack speed like in later versions. E has low damage output and doesn't pierce minions, so stacking AP for fireballs is way worse than abusing Q's two-hit procs with on-hit effects. That's why the skill order is W → Q → E. [02:44–03:37]
Her ult grants armor and magic resistance, and those stats double in dragon form — that's why HP items feel so good on her. But the ult dash isn't unstoppable. Her transformation and Fury won't cancel, but if you try to plow through CC like Veigar's Event Horizon, you stop dead in your tracks. [03:53–04:13]
Summoner Spells
The jungle standard is
Smite +
Flash. Smite covers your first clear and objective securing. Since you're taking Summoner's Resolve in the Defense tree, every Smite use also throws in bonus gold.
Shyvana has no hard CC in her base kit, and her ult dash can be interrupted. Hold onto Flash for escaping dangerous engages or creating distance for a Q last-hit — don't waste it chasing through walls.
Runes
<@lol-rune-775247> x9 / <@lol-rune-775317> x9 / <@lol-rune-775295> x9 / <@lol-rune-775365> x3.
From what's shown in the video, the totals are: 15.3% Attack Speed, 9 Armor, 7.47% CDR, and 4.5% Movement Speed. Attack speed lets you cycle Q and on-hit effects faster while flat CDR makes up for the lack of cooldown reduction on your early core items. Movement speed quints are great for both camp-to-camp transitions and chasing to keep W ticking on enemies. [04:14–04:43]
If you're taking her top lane, swap marks and quints for AD to beef up level 1 Q trades. Against AP opponents, swap the glyphs for flat magic resist. Crit runes get mentioned too, but that's more of an experimental pick.
Masteries: Offense 0 / Defense 9 / Utility 21
In Defense, you take Summoner's Resolve, Resistance 4, Hardiness 3, and Veteran's Scars. Summoner's Resolve gives you an extra 10 gold every time you Smite, while HP and armor stabilize your first clear.
The core of Utility 21 is movement speed, bonus XP, buff duration, and 6% CDR. Since Shyvana's early core items have almost no CDR, Intelligence's 3 points carry a ton of value. Going deep into Offense doesn't give much for a build that doesn't stack crit or AP. [04:42–05:08]
When you're top lane against early lane bullies like Pantheon or Tryndamere, or poke-heavy auto-attackers like Teemo, Defense 21 / Utility 9 is viable. It's a setup that picks up crit damage reduction, tenacity, slow resistance, and flat damage reduction. [05:07–05:20]
Skill Order
Skill order
Max W → Q → E and put points in R at levels 6, 11, and 16. Open camps with a level 1 W, shred armor with E at level 2, and start landing Q's double-hit at level 3.
W covers both your clear speed and combat. Ranking Q second lets you proc on-hit effects like Wriggle's Lantern and Wit's End more often. E doesn't pierce minions or monsters and has low damage — it's the last priority. [02:54–03:36]
Item Build
Starting Items
<@lol-item-771039> + <@lol-item-772003> x5. It's the standard jungle setup for clearing as many camps as possible before your first recall.
First Core: Wriggle's Lantern
The first item to finish is <@lol-item-773154>. Shyvana gets massive value out of Wriggle's Lantern thanks to her fast W and Q's double-hit. Once you rack up 30 champion takedowns or jungle camp clears combined, it upgrades into Feral Flare — so don't just force ganks, keep churning through camps to stack it. [05:21–06:00]
Top lane Shyvana can also run Wriggle's Lantern. It works well with her playstyle of surviving ganks through armor and wards, shoving the lane, then stealing the enemy jungler's camps.
Default Boots: Mercury's Treads
Classic has plenty of long-duration point-and-click CC, like Fiddlesticks's 3-second fear. Your default pick is <@lol-item-773111>. Only consider <@lol-item-773047> if the enemy team is basically all AD or if lane survival absolutely demands it.
If you went Ninja Tabi, you're missing tenacity — so look at <@lol-item-773172> instead of Wit's End. [06:01–06:48]
Phage Is Good Even Sitting in Inventory
After Wriggle's, <@lol-item-773044> is your go-to for a quick HP infusion. It gives HP, AD, and movement speed all in one package — it's efficient enough that you don't need to rush Trinity Force; just sit on it.
Your next offense-defense core item is <@lol-item-773091>. At 2,150 gold, it's cheap while offering both attack speed and magic resistance — a perfect match for Shyvana. [06:21–06:51]
If No One on Your Team Has Rune Bulwark, You Build It Yourself
First, tab to check if any teammate has <@lol-item-773107>. If no one does, you build it. The +25 magic resist aura for the whole team shuts down Classic's high flat pen and MR shred, and it's also huge against super minions.
If someone else already bought Rune Bulwark, skip this slot and rush Trinity Force instead. [06:52–07:24]
Then Complete Trinity Force
Once you have Phage, Wit's End, and any defensive items you need, finish <@lol-item-773078>. At this point, with attack speed and CDR stacked, you can reliably weave Spellblade procs between Qs. [07:23–07:33]
Final Defensive Items
Go <@lol-item-773110> against heavy physical damage, <@lol-item-773065> against heavy magic damage. Aim to get close to 40% CDR from the last item slot to cycle Q faster. At this stage, the priority isn't stacking more AD — it's staying alive to land your second and third Qs.
If your team is heavy on AD, consider <@lol-item-773050>. It brings attack speed and a lifesteal aura to the table. [07:29–07:46]
Situational Items
- Only grab <@lol-item-773153> if there are way too many tanks or you need to break through someone like Dr. Mundo. In a standard build, its AS overlaps with Wit's End and leaves you squishy — low priority.
- If the enemy has multiple melee champions, <@lol-item-773068>. You can also pick <@lol-item-773073> if you need a second Sunfire item.
- Against unavoidable suppression like Skarner or Warwick, or if you keep getting locked down by Exhaust, go <@lol-item-773140>. Buy it after your core.
- Late-game elixirs: prioritize Elixir of Agility over Elixir of Fortitude. Q's two hits can crit, so attack speed and crit efficiency are strong.
- The experimental Trinity Force alternative is <@lol-item-773178>. In dragon form, hitting two targets with Q procs it instantly — though even in the video, it's presented as an unverified idea. [07:47–09:18]
Items to Avoid
Sword of the Occult takes too much risk delaying your core for too little payoff. Madred's Bloodrazor is way too expensive for what it gives, and The Black Cleaver doesn't offer enough HP or CDR for Shyvana, who leans heavily into magic damage.
Tiamat and Ravenous Hydra have low priority on Shyvana since W already clears jungle and waves effectively. The Warmog's Armor + Atma's Impaler combo only gives around 60 AD at 4,000 HP — for the video's build, stacking more Sunfire items is just better. [09:19–10:22]
Jungle Strategy
Never Let Camps Sit Empty
Shyvana isn't a jungler who needs to force ganks to scale. Pop W, clear camps fast to stack Wriggle's, and if you spot the enemy jungler on the map, take the empty camps on the opposite side. Don't sacrifice W's clear speed by sitting around waiting for a gank that might not come.
No Bonus Dragon Damage, But Still Fast
This version doesn't give bonus damage to dragons. Even so, W's DPS and Q's double-hit make objective takes quick. Secure vision and Smite, start the objective first, and when the enemy shows up, either ult over a wall to escape or turn and fight. [03:51–03:58]
Path Your Ult Carefully
In teamfights, soak initial damage with your HP and defensive items while spreading W across multiple targets. Your ult armor doubles in dragon form, making the post-transformation window your tankiest moment. But you can't force through CC like Event Horizon — so look for flanking angles and wall jumps instead of charging the front door.
When Playing Top Lane
Top lane Shyvana can boost her level 1 Q trades by taking AD marks and quints. After shoving the wave with W, don't just sit there — use Wriggle's Lantern to steal enemy jungle camps. Against strong ranged harass or early trade bullies like Pantheon and Tryndamere, switch to 0/21/9 masteries, and use flat MR glyphs against AP opponents.
TL;DR
Non-stop camp clearing with W to stack Wriggle's. Build Phage and Wit's End to give yourself a fighting body. If no one on your team has Rune Bulwark, buy it yourself, then finish with Trinity Force and defensive CDR items.
