The gray buildings in Sparkling Skylands aren't from Celadon City...

A partial excavation and restoration of the buildings in the north-east corner of Sparkling Skylands, where Gyarados can be found. N.B.: not my restoration, but I consider it reasonably accurate. As many people in this sub will know, Pokemon Pokopia takes very heavily in its design cues from Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu and Pokemon Let's Go! Eevee, the seventh generation quasi-remakes of Pokemon Yellow. Almost all buildings, furniture, items, and areas in the game bear very strong resemblance to equivalents in LGPE. This has led to some confusion in the Sparkling Skylands. Most of the Sparkling Skylands is covered in various designs of yellow-shaded building, like this: Again, not mine, but it serves a reasonable representation that stays fairly true to the ruined versions found when you first reach the map. These are very familiar from LGPE's Saffron City, and why it is fairly clear that Sparkling Skylands is predominantly based upon Saffron City. From LGPE. You can even see the air conditioning units on these buildings which also exist on the Dream Island ruined yellow building on Dragonite Islands in Pokopia, you can see the same asphalt roads as in the Sparkling Skylands, and of course the same semi-circle top for the Silph Tower. However, the buildings on the north-east island of Sparkling Skylands depart from this design scheme. They use the same stone pillars on the sides, plaster for the main parts of the wall, and window panes, but... they're just gray, rather than sharing in the yellow color scheme used elsewhere. This has led some to speculate that these buildings are in fact from Celadon City, the neighbouring city to Saffron City in the games. One unfortunate problem: Celadon City, LGPE, screenshot grabbed from internet The gray buildings in question look nothing like the buildings or environment found in LGPE's Celadon City, which should have otherwise provided the design language. There's no black iron tiling running up the sides, no green and yellow cladding, no green stone tiling, and no brick pavements or brick borders. So... where is the north-east Sparkling Skylands island based on? Here's my answer: Saffron City, LGPE, screenshot grabbed from internet In LGPE, when you step into Sabrina's gym, you are immediately teleported to the rooftop of a skyscraper amongst several other skyscrapers. Each rooftop has several teleports, which form a maze of teleports you must navigate to get progressively higher up the skyscrapers until you reach and can battle Sabrina at the top. The skyscrapers are shown here. The blue and purple lights "pulse", rather than being constant. Additionally, in the background, several other skyscrapers of the same design can be seen without the blue and purple lights. If you imagine all the blue and purple lights and the cyber flooring were turned off... suddenly we have buildings an awful lot like those in the corner of the Sparkling Skylands, particularly because the design of these skyscrapers is basically the same as the yellow Saffron City buildings in LGPE but in a gray-blue evening palette. My view is that these are far to what is preserved in the corner of Sparkling Skylands than anything that can be found in Celadon City. There is one confounding factor, which I will put in spoilers because it is deep, deep post-game content. When you complete the Pokedex in Pokopia, you get the recipe for the Neo Dowsing Machine, which will take you to a hidden building underneath the gray buildings where you can get a Diploma for having completed the Pokedex. In LGPE, the Diploma is conferred on you by the Gamefreak developers from their office in... the Celadon Condominiums, the green building in LGPE pictured earlier. Oh dear, are we back to Celadon after all? My view is not. To understand why, we need to know why the Gamefreak Office is in the Celadon Condominiums. From their foundation in 1996 until 2020, the Gamefreak headquarters in real life were in Carrot Tower, Setagaya, Tokyo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrot_Tower). Many of you will know that the region of Kanto in the Pokemon world is heavily based on the actual area of Kanto in Japan. If you map the two against each other... then Celadon City is the Pokemon equivalent of Setagaya, a ward of Tokyo. That means, when Pokemon Yellow was released, and indeed when LGPE released in 2019, the Gamefreak Office made perfect sense to be in Celadon. But... in 2020, Gamefreak moved their headquarters to Kanda Square, Chiyoda, Tokyo. Where is the Chiyoda ward's equivalent from real world Kanto to Pokemon Kanto? Well... it's Saffron City a.k.a. Sparkling Skylands! So I think this is a bit of a red herring, and the moved diploma location does not relate to Celadon City when the design otherwise still follows Saffron City. That's about it, folks! Just a fun bit of lore drop/detective work.
