Trying the withered plant placement trick, but my flowers won't wither with dry stone. Any ideas?

Recently, some players discovered a trick: once a withered plant is floating in the air, you can place furniture underneath it (even furniture that normally can't hold plants). Watering the plant to refresh it lets you keep it sitting right on top of that furniture. I’m trying to recreate this, but I'm having trouble with flowers. Placing a dry stone next to them doesn't seem to make flowers wither at all—only my grass, bushes, and trees turn into their withered state. Is there a specific trick to make flowers wither, or can they simply not be dried up this way? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here's the original video showing how it's done.
