Ryze’s abilities have a high mana cost, not to mention the short range on Rune Prison (W) and Spell Flux (E), making him an easy target to kill after a couple of pokes. However, you can lose the fight if you step into his range so make sure to use your Dark Sphere [Q] - Scatter the Weak [E] combo to create some distance while fighting.
